- W343284902 abstract "Whereas psychotherapy is often called an art, psychology clearly encompasses more than psychotherapy. In years as psychologist, I have often experienced artistic, creative moments not only in the therapy room but also when doing research as well as when teaching. As discipline, psychology lends itself well to creative personalities. This raises several questions. First, what types of artistic endeavors are popular among psychologists? Second, how do psychologists with artistic penchants integrate these inclinations with their professional work? I think it would be fair to answer the first question, All things artistic are popular! Among own colleagues here at Fuller's School of Psychology, there are passionate poets, potters, singers, instrumental musicians, photographers, and writers. There are also avid sketchers, as evidenced by the works of art I have seen colleagues occasionally produce on the borders of notebook pages during longer faculty meetings. (Some might call this latter activity doodling, but the quality of the illustrations I have seen surpasses such base interpretation!). Moreover, some colleagues might argue that perfectly casting trout fly into mountain waters is itself an artistic act, and I would tend to agree. The answer to the second question is less straightforward but is an important issue. If we are striving for integration as Christian psychologists, we need to do more than merely master both theological and psychological bodies of literature. When I think of integration, the primary issue actually is not academic but rather is the extent to which I am an integrated person (Anderson, 1990). Indeed, I believe reasonable rephrase of Jesus' comment regarding the greatest commandment (Mark 12:30) is, Love the Lord your God with your whole person, with your whole person, with your whole person, and with your whole God calls us to be whole persons, in the midst of compartmentalized culture that is increasingly disintegrating into random bytes. I have often told students that I believe great metaphor for our culture in the USA today is the TV remote, whereby we constantly surf multiple channels bearing no relevance to each other. In contrast, I believe Christ's call to be whole persons represents an increasingly countercultural mandate. Within this context, the question of how to integrate an artistic spirit into one's work as psychologist gains even greater significance. Clearly, compartmentalizing one's artistic leanings is not the answer. Rather than attempting to answer this question comprehensively, I will share some of own autobiographical perspectives. I think it is at least fair to say that life presents germane case study. I was born to two professional artists whose shared life verse was Psalm 90:17: May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us-yes, establish the work of our hands. I began earnest freehand drawing attempts at the age of three and as boy of six was sure that artist would be one of eventual vocations. Reality had not yet noticeably encroached upon goal setting, however, because I confidently asserted that in addition to being an artist, I would also be a baseball player, missionary, and skydiver. It was soon thereafter that life's limits began to impinge on dreams, and in frustration I told parents that my hobby is collecting hobbies. Grief as Growth Even at that early age, I was confronted with the limits of hours in day, and I needed to work through this frustration for years. At this point, I confess that I am by no means frustration-free! Still, I have come to greater sense of peace, which has manifested itself in two maxims that students hear from me repeatedly. The first is, Embrace your limits as God's gifts, and the second is, All decisions involve loss. These two mottoes are foundational to integration of an artistic spirit as psychologist, as well as overall integrative attempts to love God with whole person. …" @default.
