- W34329215 abstract "Sir David Cuthbertson was the first to interpret the whole body net loss of nitrogen after injury as a generalized response to the organism’s “urgent needs … of repair and maintenance”, the net loss far exceeding the loss due to immobilization [1] and being too extensive to come from the local area of damaged tissue alone [2]. From the relationship between the losses of nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus Cuthbertson postulated that the catabolized tissue was mainly skeletal muscle [1]. The nitrogen loss was generally related to the extent of the injury and was also associated with an increased oxygen consumption and elevated body temperature [2]. Later, he was also the first to demonstrate that injection of pituitary extracts after trauma could diminish the nitrogen loss [3]." @default.
