- W343589196 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the different types of hypoxia of hypoxemic origin. In hypoxia, there is a lack of oxygen supply. However, the supply of blood and other substrates vital to metabolism remain normal or even increased, depending on whether chronic or acute hypoxia is involved. Ischemia, on the other hand, involves not only a decrease in oxygen, blood, and metabolite supply but also a decrease in myocardial washout, that is, a difficulty in the elimination of toxic metabolic degradation products. Hypoxia is a generalized phenomenon that is uniformly distributed throughout the myocardium, as opposed to ischemia, which is localized to the area perfused by a stenosed arteriosclerotic artery or to the subendocardial zone in cases of pressure overload as encountered in severe aortic stenosis. Two pathological conditions are associated with hypoxemic hypoxia: chronic cor pulmonale of various origins and cyanotic congenital heart disease. Hypoxia is associated with right ventricular hypertrophy secondary to pulmonary hypertension in practically all types of hypoxic hearts: neonatal or fetal heart, high-altitude heart, chronic cor pulmonale, and cyanotic congenital heart disease. The changes in the histology and ultrastructure of the myocardium, secondary to hypoxia, depend on its importance, its duration, and the presence or absence of associated factors." @default.
