- W344014735 abstract "In the midst of the renaissance in the teaching of writing, one area that has proved problematic is that of arrangement, one of the five major divisions of classical rhetoric and a term commonly understood today to refer to the organization and structure of nonfictional prose. Richard Haswell, in a 1986 article on essay organization, deplores the lack of productive work in this area, noting that basic information seems called for (402). In this regard, he is in accord with Richard Larson, who, in his comprehensive updated survey of scholarship on form and structure, observes that, despite enrichment in the last decade, fundamental issues been dealt with slightly, hesitantly, or not at all (82). Both Haswell and Larson reaffirm Frank D'Angelo's earlier statement that know very little about in composition (Conceptual 55). Certainly some useful scholarship on the pedagogy of arrangement has appeared in the last ten years or so, including Haswell's article and work by Coe, Enos, Hartwell, Knoblauch and Brannon, Podis, and Selzer. Additionally, today's process-oriented textbooks generally attempt to present some theoretically informed advice to students on organizing and arranging their writing. Such approaches have succeeded in providing a desirable supplement to the traditional of development approach. One area particularly deserving of more attention, we believe, is that of rhetorically-based schemes of arrangement. Whether arrangement patterns are labeled according to some inherent textual property (e.g., the general to specific order) or according to a predominantly situational property (e.g., the well-known order by importance pattern or Edward Corbett's familiar to unfamiliar scheme [59-601), they can ultimately be considered from a rhetorical standpoint.
