With Give My Poor Heart Ease: Voices of Mississippi Blues, he lovingly revisits these recordings, films, and interview transcripts frame selections with commentary that, when combined with resources from similar projects, present snapshots of lost southern One hears voices of black entertainers, prisoners, evangelicals, field hands, and everyday people who have populated Ferris's scholarship as presented in numerous books and articles, recordings, documentaries, and museum exhibits. The narratives published here, accompanied by both CD of recorded selections and DVD of historic footage from rare films, showcase his fieldwork from 1960s and 1970s as celebration of southern life. Ferris's story begins in countryside of Warren County, Mississippi, on his family's farm some fifteen miles southeast of Vicksburg, where he grew up in post-World War II era surrounded by black and white people in Mississippi undergoing rapid change. Seemingly separate worlds divided races during his childhood, but Ferris understood that lives of blacks and whites linked (p. 1). Recognizing as teenager the precious and already fleeting world of black community around him, he began interview and photograph blacks who on his family's farm (p. 4). While at Davidson College, he joined civil rights movement and then returned Vicksburg for Freedom Summer in 1964. Admitted seminal folklore program at University of Pennsylvania in 1967, he received state grants and Ford Foundation funding for his Mississippi fieldwork that formed basis of his dissertation and provided material for his 1968 films Black Delta, Part i and Part 2, which are included on accompanying DVD. Then he published landmark Blues from Delta (New York, 1978). Thinking back, Ferris explains, As child, teenager, and adult, saw music as bridge that allowed me connect black community (p. 6). At first Ferris followed custom and in new communities approached local white men for introductions black bluesmen he wanted interview, but he quickly discovered practice heightened racial divide; henceforth, he went directly into black community, where he found '[t]he door here swings on hinge of good welcome at all time.' Entering, Ferris experienced separate black world where he might feel intimately familiar or like a total stranger. The bluesmen helped Ferris to embrace black culture. Their voices, he explains, led me into territory that was forbidden, sometimes dangerous, yet interwoven with my own life. Barred by segregation from entering these worlds, went against grain (p. 6).
