• W34436974 abstract "Publisher Summary Application of expert systems to the control of technological processes is shifting from the plane of theory to practice. This chapter presents a scheme for designing a real-time expert-system-based fault-tolerant control system (ESFTCS) for complicated industrial process control. The system is capable of detecting faults and reconfiguring the controller, and can accommodate various operating conditions to achieve the system task safely. The applications to soaking pit and yeast fermentation processes have depicted that ESFTCS can do much to improve the operating characteristics of the system. They also show that the approach proposed herein is appropriate for industrial process control. It has advantages and disadvantages with respect to controlling dynamic processes. One advantage is that it is real-time, and it is almost plausible for the control system to take proper action for the instantaneous situation of the process, because it is based on observing the state variables of the process and diagnosing the faults or malfunctions of the control system. One disadvantage is that it depends upon a good knowledge of the plant, reliable control elements, and sufficient observability and controllability following failures. This chapter presents the application of expert system techniques to industrial process control. A real-time expert-system-based fault-tolerant strategy is proposed for processes with sensor and/or actuator failures. In the strategy, the expert system is used to diagnose the faults, malfunctions, or misoperations in the system and to reconfigure the controller to maintain acceptable system performance in real time, with a combination of formal engineering analysis, mathematical processing techniques, and traditional expert system techniques." @default.
