- W344933009 abstract "When listening to others talking about philosophical works, or even debating a philosophical question, I often ask myself just what they expect from reflection. Since generally I fail to elicit any answer at ail, or at least no satisfactory answer from them, I ask what we anybody might or should expect. For it seems clear that at least on occasion, some rather fundamental disagreements arise in which the protagonists struggle not so much with the argument as with the assumptions about its status. And these assumptions necessarily touch the question of what one hopes for when embarking upon reflection. Similarly, when reading commentaries on great works in our tradition, I often get the impression that, while the commentator may arrange quite accurately the contents and structures, something fundamental is missing in them which the Originals, by contrast, provide. Again, I cannot help suspecting that the critic expects from the works he considers either too much, too little, or in any case something inappropriate and that this expectation stands as an unspoken, decisive, if not erroneous premiss in his own argument. From repeated experiences of this sort, I hâve often imagined writing a Preface which could be attached not only to any of my own writings, but also and more importantly to any philosophical writing at ail as a kind of warning to the reader about what he may rightly expect and what not. Such a Preface would clear the air of misguided expectations, premisses which otherwise threaten to distort the works from the outset." @default.
