- W345397902 abstract "In her novel Push, Sapphire constructs the fictional story of Precious Jones, an inner-city, African American girl who has given birth to two children by her father by the time she is 16 and has suffered lifelong sexual, physical, and emotional abuse from her mother. She is angry and illiterate, and in her desire to learn to read and write, she attends an alternative high school, where her life begins to change. While the novel deals with Precious's familial degradation, it also presents the destructive effects of institutional oppression, especially within the traditional education system. In Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Paulo Freire (1999) asserts that for oppressors and the oppressed to become truly liberated, the traditional banking approach to education, in which are the depositories and the teacher is the depositor, must be replaced with a cointentional, problem-posing pedagogical approach that creates simultaneous teachers and (p. 53). Through this sense of mutuality and connection, liberated culture and character may be achieved. In this essay examine how Freirean theories help us to understand the mutually beneficial student-teacher relationship in Push, and the coinvestigative, cointentional pedagogical approach that makes students critical thinkers and stimulates true reflection and action upon reality (Freire, 1999, pp. 64-65). also include an examination of devices and techniques that Sapphire uses to characterize Precious's literacy acquisition process and of her oral and written voice as these elements represent the voices of many impoverished, silent students who are present-and neglected-in our classrooms today. Finally, discuss the importance of incorporating nonstandard English dialects into mainstream curricula. Constructing the Voice of Precious Jones Within the first few pages of the novel, the reader begins to acquire a sense of Precious's lexicon and linguistic rhythm. One's dialect and individual linguistic rhythm are reflective of one's background and character: cultural and familial influences, literacy and educational levels, values and attitudes. Precious's speech reflects a dialect of urban Black English. Later in the novel, Sapphire will show that literacy acquisition can be achieved using one's native linguistic structure, a valuable contribution to Freirean-influenced pedagogy. All students deserve the right both to develop the linguistic skills they bring to the classroom and to add others to their repertoires (Delpit, 1995, p. 68). Push is the story of a young woman trying to find her voice, which she accomplishes over the course of the narrative primarily through dialogue with her teacher, fellow students, and journal in an alternative school. The structure of this oral narrative requires the reader's interaction with the text and compels the reader to begin to set aside preconceived notions of an angry, illiterate, oppressed teenager-or at least to form a willingness to understand the character's thinking, behavioral, and linguistic processes. Precious begins her story: I was left back when was twelve because had a baby for my fahver (Sapphire, 1997, p. 4). She describes her daughter as having Down Sinder, and connects her abusive history to her depressed education: I should be in the eleventh grade [but] I'm in the ninfe grade. got suspended from school 'cause I'm pregnant which don't think is fair. ain' did nothin'! (p. 4). This painful introduction provides the reader with the knowledge that Precious lacks consistent education and that her father's sexual abuse toward her is at least one primary reason for her arrested emotional development, which has contributed to her lapses in education and linguistic/literacy development. The statement that she was suspended from school because she became pregnant clearly places Precious as being not just abused by her father, but also oppressed or even denied by traditional educational institutions. …" @default.
