- W34560042 abstract "The Anglo-Norman poem entitled the Walling of New Ross has received little attention from scholars. Palaeographical and historical interests were long served by Frederick Maddens edition of 1829,1 which carried on the preliminary pages a Modern English translation interspersed with Maddens own narrative. A few years later this rendering was retold in verse by Letitia Landon, alias Mrs George MacLean, and appeared in a literary anthology.2 In 1879 the palaeographer J. T. Gilbert published a diplomatic tran scription of the Anglo-Norman poem but did not address the language problems.3 At the turn of the century a Wexford County historian, P. H. Hore, reproduced Maddens prose rendering almost word for word, and without acknowledgement of its source, except to introduce it by the sentence We will now proceed to a translation in prose of the aforesaid poem.4 In an address to the New Ross Literary Society in 1911, G.H. Orpen summarised the poem in few words, quoting Landon's jingles to illustrate its spirit.5 Another sixty-five years passed before the text received the editorial care it merited. In 1976 Hugh Shields observed not only current textual practices but provided scholars with a meaningful translation en regard.6 The rhymester chose as his subject matter the entrenchment as a prelude to the wal ling of New Ross, an Anglo-Norman town on the Barrow River in South-East Ireland. Internal evidence and the colophon point to 1265 as the date of composition. Its account seems to belong to the chronicle genre, being cited by authorities such as Hore, Orpen, Vising and Legge.7" @default.
