- W345766684 abstract "Brad is a young, 25 year old professional IT worker for a large fast food chain company. As a recent college graduate, Brad has been with the company for four years. He is challenged, aggressive and committed to create wealth in his life so at the age of forty-five, he can live financially independent and do what he really wants to do-- extreme sports. Brad is single and very bright. He was recruited into a high potential leadership program with the company and has done extremely well in meeting all of the company's leadership expectations. Brad plans to move rapidly into higher positions of responsibility and pick up an MBA degree in the process. Is Brad typical of the workers seeking entry-level opportunities in today's organizations? We all know people like Brad and we might say that he typifies most of the entry-level employees in today's workforce. However most twenty something employees in the workplace are unlike Brad and seem to be facing hard challenges as they seek to navigate through the span of a career in the 21st century. Some of these challenges occur in working effectively within an organization. Challenges such as: * Getting and using information about complex global organizations with ever-complex job responsibilities and growth opportunities. * Maintaining loyalty to business enterprises that are subjected to acquisitions, buy-outs, layoffs and large scale corporate change. * Needing opportunities with large earning potential and limited responsibility that may chew up time for quality of life activities. * Answers to three critical career management questions: who am I; what's out there for me; and how do I get it? * How best to stay resilient, flexible and accessible to protect job security? * How best to utilize technology to create value and sustain a balance of professional, social and personal time? These and other issues surfaced from interviews conducted recently with employees in a large multi-national financial services firm. They are issues that occupy the thoughts and ultimate behavior of most workers. The principles described in this article can be applied to anyone - those searching for work or those currently employed who want to actively manage their career for the long term. Although these issues may be common in American industries, the drive for dollar incentives and balance in terms of life styles is likely to surface in employee groups anywhere in the world. These issues are not uncommon from those that faced entry-level opportunities twenty-five to thirty years ago when research on career management in organizations began. The outplacement industry was one of the motivators that stimulated thought on the question of how do people manage or mismanage careers. One of the reasons so many people were targeted for layoffs is that they were not practicing solid career management behavior in organizations. The seventies saw a plethora of self-help books to assist people in making career transitions-thus creating a whole technology on job search techniques and career management strategies. Few, however, took on the task of understanding how people avoided layoff situations, or how they effectively managed their careers while employed. This fascination spawned the early attempts to define and clarify organizational career management systems. The big question was: how does an organization integrate its human resource systems (performance management, reward and recognition, succession/replacement planning, etc) with the needs of an individualis career growth? The author contributed to an organization-wide initiative to create and install a career management system for a global energy company. Space in this article precludes the detailing of that project; however, the energy and resources needed to install the system required over two years and the involvement of hundreds of employees and outside resources to make it happen. Its legacy has it as one of the more comprehensive systems in industry. …" @default.
