- W346218886 abstract "Although the principle of general covariance is almost fifty years old, physicists are not yet agreed on its meaning and value as a tool in physics. The arguments against it range somewhat as follows: “Covariance is a mathematical artifice — no physical meaning can be attached to it. Every equation can be expressed covariantly. How can a covariant form be right or wrong from a physical point of view ? — covariance is only a method of expressing given physical relations in a more pleasing and elegant mathematical form.” Representative of the more prevalent opinion are the arguments holding out partial acceptance. These are roughly the following: “It is clear that Lorentz covariance plays an important role in physics. There is, however, no adequate proof or evidence that extended forms of covariance have any explicit meaning. The physical implications of general relativity are still too uncertain to justify an acceptance of general covariance as a well-established physical principle; however, a general covariance in the sense of a natural extension of Lagrange’s method in point mechanics is acceptable.”" @default.
