- W346481605 abstract "FINALLY SPRING is here, bringing with it the interminable Presidential debates and primaries and the usual wrangling over the federal budget. In light of this, we feature the periodic piece, View from Washington, by ASAHP Executive Director Tom Elwood. In this particular article, he focuses on the federal budget process and the impact of budget deliberations on funding for allied health-including an examination of how these decisions could affect the budget deficit. Since this paper was written in November, it will be interesting to see how the latest bipartisan approaches to preventing a recession will play out in the current budget deliberations. This issue of the Journal also contains five Original Articles and two Commentaries. As has been the policy for the past few issues, one article appears on the ASAHP website at no cost. The article from this issue is Palumbo, Rambur, Mcintosh, and Naud's of an Ideal Career versus Perceptions of Six Health Careers. In times of workforce shortages, the recruitment of students becomes increasingly important, and understanding what potential students look for in a career is critical for effective recruitment. Palumbo and her research team compared young adults' descriptions of the characteristics of an ideal career with their perceptions of six allied health professions. From a survey of 720 18- to 24-year-olds, they found that all six of the allied health careers were less desirable than the ideal career on a number of important variables. These findings suggest that greater attention must be paid to publicizing the attractive aspects of a career in allied health. Poor dental health is a significant problem in many rural areas. Besides problems of access and affordability, one of the obvious reasons for this is thought to be a lack of knowledge about dental health. Yuen and her colleagues investigated the factors associated with adequate dental health knowledge in a sample of 151 African American adolescents living in rural South Carolina. Only a little less than 8% of the sample had what was considered adequate dental health knowledge. This group also was found to have misconceptions about periodontal health and caries prevention. A lack of knowledge was particularly significant in younger people. Among the reasons individuals choose to enter into the health care fields, one of the more universally recognized is the desire to help others. Nicole Byrne investigated differences in the level and type of reported altruism based on program selection and gender in five professions. She found no differences in the extent of altruism among these five professions or between men and women. She did, however, find different altruistic reasons for entering the health professions, with men more focused on helping society and women more interested in helping individuals. Emotional responses to chronic illnesses are related to a number of factors, including the belief system of the individual. McCracken and his team, using the framework of Rational Emotive Behavior Theory, studied the impact of secondary beliefs on the emotional responses of a group of 65 adults with arthritis. They found that different emotional responses to the illness were predicted by an individual's secondary beliefs. For example, those with a secondary belief of achievement experienced feelings of worry, while those who used an approval orientation to understand their illness experienced depression, anger, anxiety, and fear. Their findings are consistent with what should be expected in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. Studies of leadership have historically sought the most effective approach to motivating individuals in organizations. …" @default.
