Eleven are gelatinous, 56 are the granular type, and four are water-gel explosives, an entirely new type of ammonium nitrate-based explosive for use in coal mines. The list of permissible blasting devices comprises five Cardox models. The term ''permissible explosive'' as applied by the Bureau of Mines means that the explosive conforms to the basic specifications and to tolerance limits as defined in the appropriate current Bureau of Mines schedule, and implies that it will be used as prescribed in the schedule. A permissible explosive must at all times be handled, transported, and stored so as to retain its original characteristics. Permissible explosives are classed as granular, geletinous, and water-gel types. Granular explosives are well suited for use in mines that are relatively dry. Absorbed moisture can cause these explosives to deteriorate and may result in failure to propagate. Their rates of detonation range from 1,700 to 3,500 meters per second. Gelatinous explosives are of plastic consistency and designed especially for blasting rock in coal mines, although they have proved suitable for blasting coal under certain conditions.
