- W348533920 abstract "This thesis focuses on the development of a computer software to simulate the energy usage and indoor climate of Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) and the facilities where these systems are installed. Most conventional softwares are unable to treat the large water-air interface in the facilities and the function of application specific components. One of the largest constrains to the widespread of RAS is the large energy costs connected to its operation. Employing the developed computer software will help system engineers to work with energy management and to visualize how different system solutions affect the energy usage and the indoor climate. The model behind the computer software is a steady-state model that step-by-step calculate the indoor climate of the RAS facilities and the function of its application specific system components; such as degassing and biofiltration components. The model was developed in cooperation with Wallenius Water who also helped to verify the model using indoor air measurements and energy usage data from a RAS installation in Tianjin, China. The model was also tested in different scenarios of system design and it proved that the model were sensitive to certain parameters. Namely the ambient temperature, water temperature of the exchange water, water temperature set-point, the ventilation flowrate, both ventilation and through the components; all do to a large extent influence the energy usage of the RAS facilities. Finally the model was employed to perform energy management in one of the future RAS installations planned by Wallenius Water. The result was a reduction in energy usage from the heating and cooling system from 590 MWh/year to 252 MWh/year; this proves the function of the computer software as a tool to perform energy management." @default.
