• W349410672 abstract "In the design of shallow foundations normally used in rural buildings on sand, the settlement criterion is more critical than the bearing capacity. Likewise, it has also been found that widely used methods to estimate the footings settlement on sand, generates differences with the observed in full scale field tests. The aim of this study is to establish a nonlinear 3D model based on Finite Element Method (FEM) for the analysis of soil and footing response as a whole under external, vertical and centred loads. The soil is modelled as an elastic–perfectly plastic material, with a linear Drucker-Prager yield criterion. The footing is considered to be rigid and rough and the interaction soil-footing is taken into account. To verify the model adopted, measured settlements from full-scale test have been compared with those obtained through the model and those provided by other analytical methods. The obtained results show predicted settlement values by the model close to those measured in full-scale test with an average error slightly lower than to those provided by other widely used analytical methods. Therefore, the generated model has demostrated to be a valid method for settlement prediction of footing under vertical and centred loads, resting on sand.
