- W349542659 abstract "By their very nature, many streets requiring some form of speed control are also those which carry route service buses through local areas. Some traditional road hump designs can affect bus operations, driver stress and passenger comfort. This report details an investigation into devices which might control the speed of light vehicles while causing only acceptable discomfort to drivers and passengers of buses. Detailed testing of several flat-topped devices was carried out using a range of buses, and a representative passenger car for control purposes. In addition, speed studies examined the in-service behaviour of car drivers while crossing the raised pavements. The levels of vertical acceleration (discomfort) experienced by bus passengers during normal route service were also examined. Platform lengths longer than bus wheelbases were found to result in lower levels of discomfort for occupants, while ramp lengths of 2000 and 2500 mm provided discomfort levels for bus occupants which were acceptable to bus operators, drivers and passengers. The aim of the research was to arrive at a device design which also adequately controlled passenger car speeds. Given all the requirements of the device, it was concluded that a 2000 mm ramp, used in conjunction with a 8 m long raised area 100 mm high, provided the most balanced treatment. There is only a marginal increase in mean car crossing speeds, of 4 km/h, and occupant discomfort is only about half that experienced over conventional raised pavement designs at normal crossing speeds." @default.
