• W349710013 abstract "Immunohistochemical methods were employed to investigate the cellular and ultrastructural localization of the gap junction protein connexin43 (Cx43) in the rat adrenal cortex. Cx43-immunoreactive (Cx43-IR) puncta were seen around cells in the zonae fasciculata and reticularis, but not around those in the zonae glomerulosa and intermedia. The number of Cx43-IR puncta increased at greater depths within the zona fasciculata. In the zona reticularis, many Cx43-IR linear structures were intercalated between cortical cells and some immunoreactive puncta appeared to be distributed within cells. By EM analysis, these immunoreactive structures were found to be labelled gap junctions or omega-shaped and annular junctional profiles. The results indicate that gap junctions in the zonae fasciculata and reticularis of the rat adrenal cortex are composed of Cx43 and suggest regional variations in the contribution of gap junctions to the cortical cell functions." @default.
