- W350051429 abstract "DURING THE LAST TWENTY-FIVE YEARS, one of the biggest changes to occur in opera theater, music theater, and commercial concert production is the growth in visual presentation. It is astounding how even opera has entered the world of high tech with elaborate sets, costumes, and special effects, not to mention good acting. In this world of visual stimulation, voice teachers cannot neglect visual production in the training of young singers. number of students in private studios who are involved in musicals, commercial music, talent shows, and contemporary worship has skyrocketed, requiring students to be adept in visual presentation as well as voice production. As teachers have added commercial vocal technique to their training, they must also become producers of the art of visual presentation. Teachers must not only work vocal technique, but also find a way to include performance lessons and even acting. One of the best ways to do that is to include master classes in the core curriculum for their studio students. In my studio, I have few high school students who come only for voice lessons. Instead, they sign up for my Performance Package that includes both private lessons and master classes. I emphasize the idea that voice instruction is only part of the necessary core for becoming complete great Luciano Pavarotti reminded us of this when he said, The better voice doesn't [necessarily] mean the better singer-or, I might add, the better performer. To clarify, think of your role in producing complete performers as you would manage cheerleader tryouts. Guest judges usually determine who will make the cheerleading squad. As a former cheerleading coach, it has been my experience that even though there are separate scoring categories, such as spirit and technical ability, cheerleaders who had the best spirit usually scored high in technical ability as well, even though it was obvious they were a bit technically challenged. In other words, even in cheerleader tryouts, presentation affects the way total performance is perceived. Keep in mind that it is same with singers. authence is always the final judge. If singers do not connect with their final judge visually, then they often simply will not connect at all-no matter how good their singing is! We all have observed that when young singers are nervous, they sometimes form bad habits in facial expressions or stage etiquette, making their overall performance poor. Habits take practice to correct. At my master classes, students practice their performances for their classmates from the walk onto the stage to the exit. This discipline includes announcing their repertoire, performing both bows, and acknowledging the accompanist. They practice everything they will do and rehearse it until all aspects are free from distracting movements of any kind. Vital self-evaluations occur when students watch each other perform, evaluating their peers' moves and expressions, and vowing secretly to never make the same mistakes. It helps in curbing unfavorable tendencies. This exercise is difficult to achieve in private lessons alone. Students also learn about character development and interpretation by having conversations in class concerning what their bodies are saying in conjunction with the lyrics, story line, or character. This is equally important in all genres, a necessary part of developing and polishing complete performances. One of the best compliments I get from our recital guests is that our students are poised, confident, professional, and great performers. These observations were not commonly received before the inclusion of master classes. Most musicians agree that many vocal problems are the result of tension that affects visual presentation. Tension is often caused by anxiety, and more specifically, performance anxiety. Many students think they have to force something to produce; instead, they need to learn to trust their voices under pressure. …" @default.
