- W35161776 abstract "Dangerous bends constitute a traffic safety problem in Denmark as well as in other European countries. In Denmark about 20% of all person injury accidents and 13% of all fatal accidents occur in bends in rural areas. In France over 20% of fatal accidents occur on dangerous bends in rural areas. Accident analyses have shown that bends with relatively small radii have a relatively high accident risk. But also irregularity in bends and defects in road surfaces may be contributory causes of traffic accidents. Excessive speed in relation to the design of bends is an important causal factor. This is because motorists have problems reading the geometry of a bend and on this basis alone assessing what speed is suitable for negotiating the bend safely. This paper describes an EU project SAFESTAR undertaken jointly by the Research Division of the Danish Road Directorate (now the Danish Transport Research Institute), CETE and SETRA in France and the Dutch TNO. The aim of the project was to develop a system for marking dangerous bends on two-lane rural roads. The basic idea behind the new system is to use road markings to make drivers adjust their speed to the risk degree of the bend in good time before entering the bend. The designs have been tested on 13 bends in Denmark and France and will now be tested on a large number of bends in Denmark and will form the basis of road guidelines for rural roads. (A)" @default.
