- W351715013 abstract "This article examines in detail the construction programme and technical specifics of the two parallel viaducts which carry the new TGV Mediterranee rail link across the River Rhone outside Avignon in France. One bridge carries the Valence-Marseille TGV line, which runs North-South; the other carries the Marseille-Montpellier Grand Sud line, which runs East-West. Each viaduct has one track in each direction, and has a 1090m main viaduct and an approach viaduct about 450m long. The Grand Sud approach has a fork structure for interconnection of the lines. Each main viaduct uses some innovative techniques, including the precast segment technique. The use of external post-tensioning and concrete with 52Mpa characteristic strength enabled spans of up to 100m. Each bridge design has finely shaped pier caps and white concrete deck, in an attempt to achieve a high level of integration into the site environment. Limitations on the acceptable expansion of the tracks limited the unit length of the bridge sections to 500m. Horizontal loading assumptions, including seismic protection, required at least two fixed bearings per section.
