- W35532454 abstract "Since the discovery, between 1930 and 1940, of the carcinogenic activity of certain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and azo dyes, innumerable chemical agents have been tested. It is probably not exaggerated to say that at the pre-sent time the number of known ways of tumor induction approaches a thousand and includes such heterogenous etiologic factors as structurally defined chemical carcinogens, chemical agents of unknown composition, carcinogenic viruses, physical agents, and various types of experimentally produced systemic hor-monal imbalances. Until about 1950, however, the classification of chemical carcinogens was relatively simple since a great majority of the compounds could be grouped either as condensed aromatic polycyclic hydrocarbons or as aromatic amines, this last group including the benzacridines and the amino azo dyes. Various theories were proposed to account for the tumor producing ability of chemicals falling into these two categories. A limited correlation was established between reactivity in terms of π-electron distribution of certain molecular regions and the carcinogenic activity of angular polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and benzacridines. Attempts were subsequently made to include amino azo dyes and other aromatic amines in these theories.KeywordsPolycyclic Aromatic HydrocarbonTumor IncidenceChemical CarcinogenSulfur MustardInactive CompoundThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
