- W356722149 abstract "In the mid-1960's, in a study of teen-agers and adults in Baltimore, Cuatrecasas et al; discerned striking ethnic or racial differences in prevalence of primary adult lactose malabsorption (usually hereafter designated LM). Those medical researchers found only 16% (3 of 19) of a group of whites to be lactose malabsorbers, compared to 73% (30 of 41) of a group of blacks. Since that time, additional studies have greatly extended our knowledge of LM, and revealed that striking group differences in prevalence occur in Africa and in other parts of the world as well. However, except for a few articles in anthropological journals (Cook, 1969; McCracken, 1971; Harrison, 1975), the results of studies on LM have largely been overlooked by social science publications despite their important implications. These implications are that patterns of consumption of lactose-rich dairy products over a long historical period may have contributed to genetic changes in human populations and to notable present-day differences in prevalence of LM among ethnic or racial groups. Since important social, economic, and nutritional questions are also involved in the matter, it seems timely to acquaint the reader of this journal with the problem of LM and to place it in the context of African economic history." @default.
