- W35682351 abstract "The development of inflammation and immunity in mucosal tissues is crucial for effective host defense against invading pathogens, yet it must be tightly regulated to prevent abnormal responses to innocuous environmental antigens. Therefore, in order to avoid chronic inflammation, immune mechanisms have evolved to maintain immunological tolerance against harmless antigens. This capacity is accomplished by what has been called intestinal tolerance, an active antigen-specific immunosuppressive state directed by surveillance regulatory T cells and involving several inhibitory molecules and regulatory cytokines. This intricate immune modulation occurs in the mucosal immune system and starts at birth as a result of the acquisition of commensal microbiota. However, for the maintenance of this gut homeostasis, the host must discriminate between harmless and pathogenic antigens. In this regard, complex recognition systems have been developed to ensure that appropriate responses are induced in each case. The role of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and intestinal macrophage/dendritic cells in controlling bacterial discrimination and the modulation of gut immune responses have been extensively studied over the past decade, especially in rodents. Nevertheless, there are many unanswered questions regarding how the innate immune system differentiates microorganisms, and how it builds tolerance phenomena during infancy." @default.
