- W36002502 abstract "DESPITE A DESIRE TO ENCOURAGE STUDENTS to participate actively in class, many foreign language teachers find themselves dominating their classes. There is no lack of good will, but often teachers do not know how to exploit the special nature of the foreign language class to give their students the opportunity to try out new ways of speaking, to make mistakes, and to explore actively means of expressing themselves. Small group techniques are one way to maximize in-class opportunities for student activity. They offer an alternative to the traditional situation in which one person can speak while the entire class listens; in small groups many have the occasion to speak while other group members listen. Group dynamics can offer support to the student and help break down some of his or her inhibitions about speaking a foreign language. Furthermore, the small group thrusts onto each member an increased responsibility and opportunity to participate. In the French class, students can try on their new linguistic clothes in attempts at effective communication. At the same time, whatever grammar is being studied will benefit from a revitalization if activities are conceived to require its use. At the University of California, Berkeley, the rationalist-direct approach serves as a basis for the first-year French program. This approach's similarity to the rationale behind use of group dynamics has enabled small group activities to enhance and enliven French classes.1 The goals for the students are oral and written fluency in French and independence both from the teacher and from English. Group dynamics at Berkeley have successfully aided French instructors to free their students from the numbing role of passive listeners or semi-participants in one-way communication. The examples that follow can be adapted to most methodological approaches. Timed tasks, oral compositions, and passages to transpose into past tense are some of the most effective activities that can be accomplished in small groups." @default.
