- W36310574 abstract "The brains of the earliest, ancestral mammals were smaller than brains in most living mammals analyzed in comparative studies of brain organization and evolution. Here, brain organization in shrews, some of the tiniest living mammals, is examined and reviewed. Shrews are found to have fewer cortical areas than any other living mammal, presumably because of their diminutive brain size. These findings have important implications for theories of mammalian brain evolution because ancestral species had similarly small brains that may be constrained in ways not evident from comparative studies of larger mammals." @default.
