- W36320736 abstract "Organohalogen compounds are often utilized as synthetic intermediates, solvents, pesticides, or medicinal agents because of their effectiveness. Until recently most had not been tested for possible carcinogenicity, although their acute toxic effects were known. Long-term studies showed that several widely used chlorinated substances caused liver tumors in mice. The fumigants 1,2-dibromoethane and l,2-dibromo-3-chloropropane led to stomach and other types of tumors in both rats and mice, depending on the route of administration. Thus, continued exposure to such compounds may represent a human health hazard. However, methyl chloride, as well as the animal carcinogens methyl iodide and carbon tetrachloride, all occur naturally in the marine environment. Numerous other halogenated compounds, many with structures analogous to those of known carcinogenic or toxic materials, are found in both marine and terrestrial organisms. Other halogenated substances are essential for proper function of the mammalian organism. Therefore, in each situation, the benefits as well as the risks of using organohalogen compounds should be considered." @default.
