The aim of the present study was to investigate the relation between psychiatric problems and mental health service in children and adolescents with epilepsy. Method: Sixty four children and adolescents with epilepsy who were consecutively referred to the child neurology department and the epilepsy unit of a university hospital were included in the study. Sociodemographics questionnaire and Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) were applied to all of the cases. Then each case were interviewed and diagnosed according to DSM-IV criteria. Results: Although 48.4% (n=31) of the cases have a psychiatric diagnosis, the rate of cases who seek for psychiatric treatment was only %29.7 (n=19). Fourteen cases (21.9%) were taking psychiatric medication. When we compared the cases that referred to child psychiatry departments and those who did not, there were differences of the scores of some subscales between the two groups such as somatic complaints, delinquent behavior, aggressive behavior, social, thought, attention problems, externalizing, internalizing and total problem subscales of the CBCL. Psychiatric diagnoses were more frequent in children who referred to a child psychiatry department. Family income level was found to be associated with the demand of mental health service. Attention problems were the most important predictor for psychiatric referral. Conclusion: High rate of unmet mental health service demand in epileptic children and adolescents underscores the need for more consultation-liaison studies among child psychiatry departments and child neurology and epilepsy clinics in order to provide mental health service to these patients." @default.
