- W3662275 abstract "This chapter discusses the clinical and immunopathologic characteristics of spontaneously occurring animal arthritides resembling rheumatoid arthritis (RA) for comparison with pathogenetic mechanisms. Despite being few in number, these models represent a broad spectrum of etiologies and pathogenetic mechanisms. For instance, the polyarthropathy in NZB/KN mice appears to arise from multiple genetic factors, while that of the ank/ank mouse appears to be due primarily to the influence of a single gene mutation. In the middle of this pathogenetic spectrum is the MRL/Ipr strain in which the expression of joint disease represents a complex interaction between a single gene mutation and the genetic background. The most realistic approach to the use of spontaneous models is to acknowledge their limitations, glean the relevant data from each model, and integrate them into the larger scheme of immune injury and tissue repair. Even though a variable spectrum of articular pathology is manifested in the MRL/ lpr model, important insights have been derived from histological and immunopathological investigations. Several studies in these mice support the concept that synovial lining cells may proliferate and cause the degradation of articular bone and cartilage without the participation of large numbers of inflammatory cells." @default.
