- W36631397 abstract "Lettuce, Lactuca sativa L., is a cool-season, leafy vegetable that belongs to the Cicoreae tribe of the family Compositae. Lettuce is grown on all continents, but the greatest consumers and producers are the USA (91 000 hectares, of which 60 000 ha are in California) and Europe (total EEC area 80 000 ha). Large areas of lettuce are also grown in southeastern Australia, Japan, China, Israel, northern Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, and Peru. There are a number of features that make lettuce suitable for genetic studies. It has a relatively short life cycle, it is fully self-fertile with a high rate of natural self-pollination, it is possible to carry out a large number of crosses on one plant, and individual plants require only a moderate amount of space. Disadvantages are the difficulty of producing hybrid seed without selfed seed and the small number of seeds produced from each pollination; but these difficulties can be largely overcome. The importance of lettuce as a crop, particularly in the USA and Europe, has resulted in many breeding programs. These, in turn, have provided much of the information on the genetics of lettuce. Objectives of present-day breeding programs for lettuce are divided into three main areas: (1) resistance to diseases and pests, (2) increased yield and uniformity, and (3) improvement in horticultural characteristics such as quality and resistance to early bolting. The chapter discusses these objectives. Hybridization is essential for major improvements in inbred species such as lettuce. Following hybridization, several alternative breeding strategies exist. The chapter reviews these strategies." @default.
