- W366447469 abstract "This paper examines the concept that rutting in an asphalt pavement is dependent on the zero-shear-viscocity value, h, of the binder. Theoretical aspects of rutting and rheology are considered in some detail in order to guide the choice of rheological test and aid in its interpretation. The concept is tested with data from rutting and dynamic-creep tests. A good correlation of rutting rate and h is found for all the binders tested which include unmodified and polymer-modified bitumen at various polymer concentrations and degrees of bitumen/polymer compatibility. The effect of binder elasticity was also examined. The results indicate that h is the key quantity determining the binder contribution to permanent deformation in pavement rutting.
