- W367839405 abstract "Rollo G. Woods (ed.). Swanage: Purbeck Village Quire, 2009. Published under the auspices of the West Gallery Music Association. ISBN 0-9538319-2-2. 110.00 This collection gathers together the contents of two manuscripts of instrumental band music from Widdecombe-in-the-Moor, Devon, England. One was compiled by Richard French of Widdecombe around 1870, and the other, undated, comes from the same area and shares twelve items with the former. French was the leader of one of the chapel bands in the parish, which consisted of two violins, flute, and bass. It is not specified whether this was a double bass or a `bass-viol', the common country term for a cello. As the title implies, this was not music that the band would have played in church, but their repertoire for dances, public festivities, and private enjoyment. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Village bands of this kind were common in English rural communities in the nineteenth century. Their activities would focus on their function of supporting the singing for church and chapel services, but they would play for other formal and informal events in the community. A degree of musical literacy was common, though the musicians would often be capable of learning and playing by ear and of improvising harmony parts. There is ample evidence of this kind of music-making, both in literary works such as the novels of Thomas Hardy and other nineteenth-century writers, and in the village musicians' manuscript books that have survived. The latter often have sketches of harmony parts, and occasionally settings in two or more parts. Occasionally-as with the Widdecombe MSS, the George Matthews MSS from Pitt Mills, Somerset, and the 'Larks of Dean' MSS from Rossendale, Lancashire-full-scale band books have survived, giving an impression of the repertoire of these bands. A similar range of material is found in the Widdecombe books as in the other collections just mentioned. There are marches, dance tunes, song tunes, and independent instrumental pieces. Here the marches predominate, thirty-seven in all, along with twenty-two dance tunes, five songs, and five miscellaneous pieces. Of the dance tunes, some are from the familiar repertoire of nineteenth-century village musicians, but a large proportion are waltzes. It would be a mistake to think of these volumes being propped up for the band to play for an evening's dancing. This is the music of formal events such as Whitsun club feasts, public celebrations, or village concerts, as well as for the players' own private enjoyment. It is curious to find so many marches in the repertoire of a band that, because it included a double bass or cello, would have been unable to march. …" @default.
