W368636265 abstract "OBJECTIVE: To define the epidemiological characteristics of patients with Epilepsy in a well-defined Belarusian urban population.BACKGROUND: Epilepsy is one of the most commonly occurring neurological disorders in Belarus. Official Health and Social Statistics show a trend towards increasing annual prevalence only of Active Epilepsy (AE) over the last 5 years and a high level of disability in Epilepsy. To evaluate the validity of official statistics and a possible therapy gap, we established the first neuroepidemiological study.DESIGN/METHODS: The survey was conducted in a well-defined Belarusian urban adult (蠅18 years) population: Minsk, 1,577,944 residents as of December 31, 2013 (prevalence day). A manual search of the sources (in- and out-patients9 clinics) was done and clinical charts were reviewed by epileptologists. The data of all identified patients were brought in special designed form.RESULTS: In Minsk we ascertained 4,634 AE patients (Prevalence Point (PP) 276.6/100,000), 2,160 women (46.6[percnt]) and 2,474 men (53.4[percnt]). Female/male ratio was 0.9. 1,505 (32.5[percnt]) of them were followed up by an epileptologist, 285 (6.2[percnt]) by a psychiatrist, 2,842 (61.4[percnt]) by a GP or a general neurologist, and 641 (13.8[percnt]) were inpatients. The manual (meticulous) search in the random district of Minsk (the District) yielded 772 patients with AE (PP 607.2/100,000), 341 women (44.2[percnt]) and 431 men (55.8[percnt]) (female/male ratio 0.8).Based on official statistics from the National Register of AE treated patients, PP was 113.4/100,000 in Minsk and 109.3/100,000 in the District. This represents only 38.6[percnt] and 18[percnt] of those found in our survey in Minsk and the District accordingly.CONCLUSIONS: The study revealed an AE prevalence gap among official statistics and real data. So, the additional collected data atout 61.4[percnt] patents with AE in Minsk, and 82[percnt] in the District will help to plan the most effective and adequate preventive measures and therapeutic support.
