- W3688093 abstract "Among critics of contemporary poetry, it is a commonplace notion that American poets need to give up their fixation on confessional lyric. This kind of criticism has its flaws. First of all, the term confes sional itself is inaccurate. Poets like Lowell, Berryman, and Plath—as Frank Bidart convincingly explains in the afterward to his new Robert Lowell, Collected Poems—were never helplessly gushing inside the confession boxes of their stanzas. Their poetry remains vital by virtue of its artfulness, not its disclosures. More immediately, this type of generalization ignores the achievements of contemporary poets like Bidart himself and Louise Gliick, James McMichael and Anne Winters—poets who write autobiographically, but who could never be accused of committing versified memoir. Yet the critics do touch a sore spot. If Sappho and Petrarch were made to watch the corny parade of personalities in Bill Moyers' Fooling With Words, even they might start considering the virtues of the newest, self proclaimed avant-garde. What a pleasure, therefore, to find the first book of Elizabeth Arnold, a poet who writes passionate autobiography while chal lenging and changing the medium of her art. Arnold's book-length poem The Reef relates the author's struggle with Hodgkin's disease. Yet while Arnold never shies away from this disturbing subject, she constantly writes from outside her own perspective—directing biography out of the merely personal. Reading The Reef we turn from sec tions on the author's life to an account of a massacre in Bosnia, or a descrip tion of an Evangelical baptism on the St. John's River. But The Reef does not simply present personal suffering joined to universal truth and thus patly un-derstood. Instead, Arnold allows these non-autobiographical sec tions to stand apart. She makes us feel that we're seeing the contemporary," @default.
