- W37001454 abstract "Approximately one-half million localized cancers are treated in the United States each year either with radiation alone or with radiation in conjunction with other modalities. Compared with earlier orthovoltage systems, the better depth-dose characteristics of external beams of megavoltage X rays have resulted in improved control and survival in patients with long-term control in approximately one-quarter of the cases. Beams of protons and heavier ions have even better depth-dose characteristics, and the dose can be restricted more precisely to the tumor volume with greater sparing of sensitive adjacent tissues. Although clinical trials with charged particles heavier than electrons have been under way at several facilities since the 1950s with accelerators built for physics research, it has only been since 1990 that the first and only hospital-based proton accelerator has been in operation for the routine treatments of patients at the Loma Linda University Medical Center. To date, [approximately]12,000 patients have been treated worldwide. Therapy with protons and heavy ions has resulted in significant improvements in comparison with X rays in the control rates of ocular melanomas, chordomas, chondrosarcomas, and pituitary tumors and craniopharyngioma as well as arteriovenous malformations, despite the fact that the technology is still in the prototype stage.more » Proton therapy must first prove itself in the clinic. The construction and design of several new proton facilities reflect a general optimism on the part of the medical community for the therapeutic potential of this modality.
