In a typical encyclopedic format, 700+ careers/jobs are presented alphabetically. Each career is described in terms of a current and accurate description of the career, related school subjects and interests, educational and training requirements, earnings and outlook, and professional resources for more information. Illustrative photos, cross-references to related articles, and detailed glossaries and indexes are also included. This consistent format provides easily obtained information along with ease of comparison among entries. Volume 1 contains several items in addition to career articles (Accountant to Audiologist). The first additional item is an overview of career clusters. A Career Cluster icon in each job article enables students to read about jobs in the clusters that interest them. Developed by the U.S. Department of Education, these 16 clusters represent distinct areas of employment (e.g., Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources to Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics). By beginning with one of these broader topical areas, interested individuals can begin to narrow an otherwise too-broad selection. Each cluster description contains an overview, exploring, and outlook section. The exploring section is particularly helpful as it contains additional sources of information, including web sites and online publications. Outlook sections are summarized Department Labor forecasts of job opportunities in these areas. This consistent format allows easy comparing and contrasting among the 16 clusters. In this manner the career seeker can proceed to any entry and be comfortable with the exploration process. The encyclopedia provides an A-to-Z arrangement of career articles, a full table of contents in each volume, a full index in each volume, crossreferencing of related articles, government job classification indexes, and, with each article, a new Skills Spotlight sidebar which identifies key skills and competencies for each job as outlined in the US Department of Labor's SCANS report.
