- W373541766 abstract "In this project three-dimensional laser Doppler measurements have been carried out in a standard stirred vessel 288 mm in diameter in a plane between two baffles (45°) at an agitator speed of 188.3 rpm, i.e. at a Reynolds number of 2.9 10?. Three-dimensional measurements of single particles passing through the measurement volume enable measuring Reynolds stresses that are necessary for gaining a full understanding of the turbulence structure in a stirred vessel. Considerable effort has been spent on optimizing signal quality and data rate. A glassfiber based method has been developed and tested for optimizing measurement volume overlap, resulting in highly precise alignment. Different seeding particles have been tested, leading to the choice of aluminum coated polystyrene particles. Side and backscatter mode have been compared. In spite of a higher data rate for backscatter mode, a choice was made for sidescatter mode, because of the ambiguity of coincidence validation in backscatter mode. The influence of the coincidence window width, i.e. the maximum time between Doppler signals on all three channels used for validating three-dimensional measurements, on statistical velocity data has been examined. It is shown to have a minimum length of the order of the burst length. Finally a flow field including full Reynolds stresses has been obtained in the impeller stream at a grid of nine axial and three radial positions. The raw velocity data show higher values than found in literature, especially in the tangential direction. Velocity bias correction schemes based on transit time weighting and velocity weighting show reduction of the calculated velocities over the raw velocity values, coming much closer to literature values. Reynolds stresses and velocity fluctuations show anisotropy at the impeller tip, changing to isotropy further away from the impeller, where they appear to be related to the velocity gradients." @default.
