- W37891889 abstract "Selenium-containing amino acid transfer ribonucleic acids have been shown to be natural components of a number of anaerobic bacteria. In E. coli, the two major tRNA species modified with selenium appear to be lysine and glutamate isoacceptors. Nucleoside analysis of total tRNAs from both E. coli and C. sticklandii has indicated the presence of a major selenonucleoside, which has been characterized as 5-methylaminomethyl-2-selenouridine. Although the discovery of selenium-dependent enzymes and seleno tRNAs provides a molecular basis for the nutritional role of selenium in bacteria and animals, information on the corresponding occurrence of selenium in higher plants is fragmentary. Earlier studies reported that considerable amounts of selenium compounds in the hot water extracts of Astragalus pectinatus were adsorbed by charcoal, suggesting the presence of selenium in organic compounds containing an aromatic system or a heterocyclic ring with aromatic character. The alkaline stability of the Se component in the bulk tRNA preparations indicates that the Se is present in the polynucleotide portion." @default.
