- W38126142 abstract "cicty was that he should be forced to accept its methods and goals without question. In the absence of any unifying ideological principle, the discipline of rewards and punishments was used to provide the motivation for that unquestioning acceptance. Individual success meant the use of the existing framework of military society, as best as one could, for the achievement of personal goals. In that society personal success often was gained at the expense of, and in opposition to, the personal success of other members of the military social group. Many veterans have returned to school with the conscious, or unconscious, inclination to apply these methods of adjusting their individual aims to the aims of other members of their social group in the educational community. And they will extend this attitude to their behavior in American society in general unless educators are able to change their social thinking. Insofar as military service has provided their basis for judging individual and group relations, veterans, so far, have not been trained to clearly the conflict between individual goals achieved at the expense of other members of their social group, and the success of their society. Educators, for the most part, have failed to make them see that there is a relation between individual and social success which ultimately makes them interdependent. They have failed to teach veterans that this relation is one of cause and effect which, with increasing directness, may prove the fate of each man to be co-equal with the fate of his society. Despite the difficulties involved, it is important that educators attempt to give veterans an education in this wide sense. If they cannot succeed, the results may be serious, not just because veterans are an important part of our population, but because this failure may be symptomatic of the inability of educators to provide Americans with the means of solving their social problems." @default.
