- W386404835 abstract "King James died on 27 March 1625. He was fifty-nine, only six years older than Jonson himself, and he had been seriously ill for less than a month. Elizabeth had lived and reigned so long that the termination of James's rule after only twenty-two years – however welcome in some quarters – must for many of his subjects have seemed surprising and abrupt. For Jonson, the king had been a steadfast patron, almost a friend. Whatever his feelings about Somerset, Buckingham and that untidy, dissolute court he had tried for so long to order and transform in his masques, he was bound to regard James's death with dismay. Prince Charles, now England's king, had participated in many of these masques. And Jonson had seen enough of him to know that the intimacy and freedom he had enjoyed with the father were most unlikely to be renewed in his relations with James's fastidious and decorous son. It was almost six years before Jonson's services were required at the new court. In his twin masques of 1631, Love's Triumph Through Callipolis and Chloridia, he perceptively created for Charles and his queen a fresh and quintessentially Caroline mode, one which set the pattern for subsequent masques. Those later masques, however, were not composed by Jonson. His long-standing quarrel with Inigo Jones over which of them was responsible for the ‘soul’ of the masque came to a climax when Jonson rudely omitted Jones's name from the title-page of Chloridia." @default.
