- W38769989 abstract "The influence of deformation on structural aspects of petrology is formally recognized in the classification of metamorphic rocks based on the degree of foliation development (hornfels and granofels versus slate, phyllite, schist, and gneiss) and in the modification of textures during syntectonic mineral growth (e.g., Misch, 1969; Rosenfeld, 1970). The influence of deformation on chemical aspects of petrology is less fully explored but is evident in processes like pressure solution (e.g., Walton et al., 1964; Kerrich et al., 1977) and cleavage development (e.g., Knipe, 1981) and may drive some reactions in high-grade metamorphic rocks (Wintsch, 1975, 1981). Deformation affects chemical processes through its influence (usually positive) on chemical potential of solids (Reitan, 1977). In metamorphic rocks containing an aqueous fluid, these chemical potentials are linked to the activities of aqueous ions in the grain boundary region. Gradients in activities of aqueous species (and chemical potential) can cause diffusive mass transfer (DMT) along the grain-boundary region. This causes the redistribution of chemical components and hence minerals in the rock." @default.
