- W38897434 abstract "The types of amounts of HE and HE-contaminated materials have been determined for all AEC facilities. The total amount of HE and materials destroyed annually by the AEC facilities may exceed one million pounds by 1975. During the next quarter, the amounts for each facility will be reviewed and missing information on tests will be obtained. A literature search verifies that there is very little experimental information on the gaseous products from burning or detonating of HE in air at ambient conditions. Therefore, tests are scheduled at Pantex. To determine the NO and NO/sub 2/ levels from HE detonation, a 4-ft bomb calorimeter will be utilized for containment, and two test shots will be fired for each explosive: one in vacuum and one in atmosphere. The samples will be 10-g charges of PETN, HMX, and TNT, with PETN detonators for initiation. Both mass spectrometers and gas chromatographs are available for measuring the NO/sub x/ products (as well as other detonation products). Testing is scheduled for completion during the next quarter. Similar tests of the NO/sub x/ output from burned samples are being considered. Also, for these measurements, a burning vessel has been designed and preliminary burns have been run atmore » Burlington. Analysis methods for detecting the combustion products are now being refined. The results will be presented in a subsequent quarterly report. The Air Pollution Control Center at Durham has been contacted regarding trends in pollution requirements, and an Environmental Law Seminar at Washington provided information on new requirements of the Clean Air Act Amendments for 1970'' and the new interpretation of the 1899 Refuse Act. The present and projected requirements at the federal, state, and local levels are being assessed and will be summarized in the next quarterly repoit. Finally, studies of methods of disposal will be continued with the reclamation and solvent recovery methods being emphasized at Burlington and other methods being studied at Pantex. For recovery and disposal of HE some contacts will be established in the use of biological methods for digestion and possibly recovery of HE materials. The chemical relationships and potential for breakdown of HE compounds to form nitrates for fertilizer will also be investigated. In addition, increased contacts with other agencies including the DOD and EPA Solid Wastes Management Program will be established for determining potential methods of disposal.
