- W389507966 abstract "The photochemical reactivities of Sydney's atmospheric hydrocarbons have been determined by an extensive three- part study: (1) the compositions of the hydrocarbon emission sources were measured; (2) the contribution of each source to the total hydrocarbon burden of the air was established (from aerometric measurements); and (3) the reactivities of the principal hydrocarbon species in the sources were determined under the ambient conditions of Sydney by experiments with outdoor smog chambers. The specific rate of reaction of each hydrocarbon species with atmospheric free radicals, namely OH radicals--as determined in the smog chambers--is taken as the measure of its reactivity. On this basis, the contribution of each source to the total photochemical reactivity of the air is evaluated. Five sources of hydrocarbons account for 98 per cent of the total hydrocarbon reactivity, namely vehicle exhaust 33 per cent, vapour from the headspace over petrol 26 per cent, petrol 17 per cent, solvents 14 per cent and emissions of propylene from industrial processes 8 per cent. CO emitted in vehicle exhaust also contributes significantly to the photochemical reactivity of the air via reaction with OH radicals. When CO emissions are considered, the relative contribution of vehicle exhaust is increased from 33 to 42 per cent of the total and the contributions from the other sources are proportionately decreased.
