- W390239856 abstract "An advanced repeated load permanent deformation test was conducted to evaluate the rutting resistance of two milling/overlay asphalt pavement structures under field conditions. The X-ray Computed Tomography and Digital Image Processing techniques were employed to characterize the microstructure evolution behavior in asphalt layers before and after testing at high temperatures. It is found from the test that the stone mastic asphalt mixture (SMA-13) shows a little better potential as the overlay material in terms of the rutting resistance. Asphalt layers of the old pavement still contribute most of the total permanent deformation in overlay structures, especially the middle asphalt layer. Different air void distributions are observed between laboratory-made and field-cored specimens. After testing, the air void content and average equivalent radius of asphalt mixtures have a great increase, mainly in top and middle layers. The aggregate volume proportion decreases in the top and middle layers but increases in the bottom layer after loading. The opposite law is found for the mastic volume proportion. The outer part of specimens has a lower air void content, an almost equal aggregate volume content, and a higher mastic volume content after testing, compared to the inner part. The average angle of inclination for coarse aggregate particles becomes smaller and its coherence becomes better after testing. Finally, it is found from the laboratory test results and image analysis that most permanent deformation and cracks occur in the top (overlay) and middle asphalt layers while minor damage occurs in the bottom asphalt layer." @default.
