- W39285245 abstract "Aesthetics has to do with a union of perception and feeling, biology with the nature of organisms and their survival within the environment. Why should there be a link between these apparently disparate spheres? The reason is quite straightforward: part of the process whereby organisms adapt and survive is by display, and it is in display that we find the initial lineaments of aesthetic construction and response. Materials from two societies of the Papua New Guinea Highlands, where I have been working since 1964, can be used to demonstrate this clearly. For the anthropologist, one interest in these materials lies in the unity they exhibit between meaning and function, or, to put it another way, between aesthetics and biology." @default.
