- W395155975 abstract "The performance of the Indian software exports in the 1990s' has been phenomenal, with a sustained growth rate of about 50 percent, making the Indian software industry to emerge as a global player (Nasscom, 1999). This is the cue that this report takes to study the process of emergence of this industry group, which initially grew at a seemingly flatter rate, but boomed in recent years. Numerous theories indicate some factors and causality to the emergence of new industry or industry groups, which is considered in this report with the modified punctuated-equilibrium (PE) model, developed for similar study and tested over different other industry-groups by Wollin (1995). The overall intention of this report remains to use and validate the theoretical propositions of PE model, as a tool to explain the industry-group dynamics, with the help of the case study of the Indian software industry. The modified analytic-induction technique using multiple case study to explain the industry-group emergence, offers more potential in explaining more complex studies. However, to maintain comparative simplicity, the technique of event-history analysis is proposed and used in this report, as it offers similar explanation to analytic-induction technique, without any compromise on the theoretical richness of the case. The event-history is built up by filtering out the relevant events from the data over time, that are responsible for the evolution of the industry-group, and are explained fundamentally in two parts: the eras, and apparent paradoxes. The sequential collection of events per era and paradoxical patterns helps not only to build up the case of the Indian software industry, but also to show the causal link between the events and the outcome. The fundamental events responsible for the emergence of the Indian software industry are used to test, illustrate and elaborate the PE model, where unexpected outcomes and complex system responses are also explained. Using the PE model, it becomes evident that the industry system inherently contains multilevel, nested deep structure that accounts for the underlying order and discontinuous change. This reconfirms this report's stance of hierarchical complexity of change process, where discontinuous change can take place at multiple levels of the industry group at different points in time. This report achieves its objective by successful testing of the PE model over a whole different case of the Indian software industry. Thus, this model holds the desired explanatory power to explain the dynamics of emergence of a new industry-group. It can be further used to forecast the events, which is unimaginable with other theories, as they do not even explain the historical emergence of the industry-group, in the first place." @default.
