- W397014265 abstract "This paper deals with an analysis of the persistence of family size from generation to generation in Japan utilizing data collected in the 16th Mainichi Survey of Fertility and Family Planning conducted in 1981. A detailed examination of the data disaggregated by age of wife has led to the following findings: 1) The impact of husbands siblings on husbands age at marriage was observed for all the age groups. The parallel effect of wifes siblings on wifes age at marriage was found only in 2 of the cohorts. For both husbands and wives those from larger families tend to marry late and since late marriage reduces completed fertility the impact of size of family of origin on ages of marriage is translated into a reduction rather than an augmentation of family size persistence. 2) Desired number of children was consistently affected by wifes siblings in all of the age groups but the impact of husbands siblings was statistically significant only in the oldest group. Fertility desires prove in Japan to be a way in which family size is transmitted from 1 generation to the next. 3) The direct impact of wifes siblings on number of living children was found only in the youngest cohort. Husbands siblings were related to number of living children in the oldest and youngest cohorts but its impact was in both cases quite negligible. 4) No consistent relationship could be detected within the cohorts between number of additional children wanted and either husbands or wifes size of family of origin. The combination of these last 2 factors leaves virtually no association between size of family of origin and terminal desired family size. Small albeit statistically significant effects of size of family of origin upon number of living children were found in this study. This result in itself must be regarded with some mild surprise since the women studied herein have for the most part lived through Japans demographic transition." @default.
