- W399478001 abstract "Swapping just small fractions of the configuration of an FPGA can be very beneficial in many applications. This is in particular useful for reconfiguring the instruction set of embedded soft core processors. This is highly relevant for software driven design flows. Here, the system is initially implemented as far as possible in software (which is faster to accomplish than hardware development). By profiling the application, hot spots will be identified and kernals will be implemented for the FPGA for acceleration until performance requirements are met. There are several methodologies to integrate such accelerator modules. This ranges from small CPU instruction set extensions to large and fully autonomous modules that work concurrently with the CPU. In this chapter, we will investigate how CPU instruction set extensions can be used efficiently with the help of partial runtime reconfiguration.
