- W40170974 abstract "3fn 1623, at the age of thirty-three, Theophile de Viau was tried on the charges of lese-majeste divine (high treason), blasphemy, and heresy.1 Theophile's trial illustrates the Counter-Reformation's last excesses, and the initial stages of State control of the production and dissemination of all publications in France. The previous sentences, however appealingly clear, fail to reveal why, by French parliamentary decree, Theophile was dispossessed of his worldly belongings and banished from France in 1625, after two years imprisonment in the Conciergerie for allegedly authoring an execrable sonnet whose first verse reads: Phylis tout est foutu je meurs de la verolle (Viau 197887:ΙΠ:267).2 Nothing surrounding the story of Theophile's trial is clear. To quote Antoine Adam: Tout le monde, en verite, ment dans cette etrange affaire (349). Strange affair indeed, in which the safest course of action would be to follow the prudent counsel of another Frenchman who knew a little about being imprisoned for one's writings, Denis Diderot. Diderot wrote: Ne vous expliquez point si vous voulez vous (305).3 Every attempt to understand Theophile's trial seemingly breeds new misunderstandings. Perhaps because understanding is not quite the right word, since it is more a question of entendre than of comprendre. The parties involved in the trial, present-day critics included, understand each other's arguments and positions, but they do not hear one another (ne s'entendent pas). The ensuing situation was and is one of mesentente which the French historian Jacques Ranciere defines as a specific instance of speech where l'un des interlocuteurs a la fois entend et n'entend pas ce que dit l'autre" @default.
