- W40450168 abstract "This study is concerned with change in an educational setting, specifically the introduction of communications technologies as media for learning foreign languages in formal educational environments. The study builds on the work of scholars such as Fischer (1998), O’Dowd and Eberbach (2004), and Muller-Hartmann (2000) on pedagogy and tasks for effective use of email in foreign language learning, and brings email research to literature on educational technology, teacher/teaching change, and the impact of context on curricular change (e.g., Cuban, Kirkpatrick, & Craig, 2001; Sandholtz, Ringstaff, & Dwyer, 2000; Zhao, Pugh, Sheldon, & Byers, 2002). This case study research tracks two teachers’ experiences implementing email technology into their senior secondary Indonesian language curriculum in Queensland, Australia. Multiple instruments were used to gather rich, in-depth data from the teachers and their students. As well as drawing out the pedagogical practices of the teachers and the ways that they integrated email into the curriculum, the influences of highly idiosyncratic contextual issues on the teachers’ personal practice theories and the way that the teachers conceived of the role and potential of email in their courses are elucidated. The study finds that to implement a pedagogically sound framework and an approach that is both founded on second language acquisition (SLA) theory and known to the teachers provides a sound point of departure for an innovation. However, the study’s major finding is that the developmental pathways taken by the teachers implementing innovations are uniquely influenced by a multiplicity of contextual factors and the complexity of the teacher’s own potential for change. In recognition of this, this study suggests that innovation, particularly the introduction of new technologies into a course, is for both teachers and students a long-term developmental phenomenon and that new models of instituting and supporting innovation in educational settings are required." @default.
