- W40540747 abstract "A carefully prepared text is a boon to the reader. It adds immeasurably to the pleasure of reading. One need but think of the superbly edited texts of French classics in the Bibliotheque de la Pleiade series, or the Norton Critical Editions of World Classics and their World Masterpieces anthologies, widely used in American college courses on literature. It is the literary scholar's expertise that is brought to bear in the preparation of such texts and that attempts to do them justice. Great works of art beg for commentary, annotation and elucidation, over and over again (Dante's Divine Comedy, Cervantes' Don Quixote, Shakespeare's Hamlet). Minor works, however popular for a time, do not require it, and will eventually be forgotten. Some writers of first-rate works never gain popularity during their lifetime. Decades pass before they gain their place in the literary pantheon of their nation. Waclaw (1873-1940) is such a writer for whom Jerzy Paszek and some other literary scholars in Poland have done a great deal recently to demonstrate the high artistic value of his prose and his Classicist rather than Romantic perception of Poland's historical experience and contribution to world literature (Jerzy Paszek, Obey i Berent [Strangers and Berent] Prace Polonistyczne [Polonistic Works], series L (1955), pp. 123-137). Such a re-evaluation with the help of literary scholarship was not necessary in the case of Stefan Zeromski (1864-1925) who was a popular writer throughout his writing career. Yet, only in recent decades did his work receive" @default.
